Introduction
Using the Hermetic Principles in your day to day life
In this series we will look at a philosophy called ‘Hermeticism’. It is something I use in my own life and has been a good foundation as I continue my development in mediumship and psychic development. I have also been truly fortunate and grateful to have had my own direct experiences outside of the Theory with some concepts and Principles of ‘Hermeticism’
An interpretation of Hermes Trismegistus. There is A LOT of symbology within this picture
Hermeticism is a Western esoteric tradition based upon writings of attributed to the author Hermes Trismegistus who represents a combination of the Egyptian God Thoth and the Greek God Hermes. There is an incredibly rich history around this tradition. We have found evidence of Hermetic philosophy predating that of the Christian era, whilst in Egypt in the Alexandria era there is firm evidence of secret lodges that were dedicated to Hermetic esoteric writings. It enjoyed a resurgence in the Renaissance era whilst becoming a lot more well-known today as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn practiced it and opened up some of their uses with it.
I created this series for one primary reason. There is an enormous amount of depth to this philosophy and we will only scratch the surface of it. It is with good reason that so much of this is still not in the public domain, for as my teacher would say, ‘A little knowledge is dangerous’, meaning without proper teaching and instruction we can cause damage. You do not have to look far into the world of ‘Modern Spiritual thought’ today to see this in action.
However, because there is so much depth, we shy away completely from looking at in any capacity and thus miss out on its key ideas and concepts that can support us in our normal day-to-day life. Therefore, this series is dedicated to bridging the gap between someone who may not have come across this before and some key principles within it. We will look at how whilst initially they may seem abstract at first, it eventually becomes clear how these forces play a key role in our day-to-day life. By understanding these, we can use this knowledge to help us when life inevitably can become tougher to navigate through.
I thought the best way to do this is to devote each section to one of the key principles of the Hermetic thought. I will use those that were set out from ‘The Kybalion’ which is a book written in the early 1900s outlining key Hermetic teachings. They split the book into seven sections, much like how I will with this series with each section forming a key teaching of the Hermetic tradition. I will quote some of the Kybalion within that section before breaking it down in more simplistic terms and how we can apply this to help improve our lives.
'The Kybalion' A useful book outlining the seven key principles of Hermerticism
These seven Hermetic laws did not just spring first from the Kybalion though. They originally came from the surviving writings of the ‘Corpus Hermitica’ which was a series of letters authored by Hermes Trismegistus explaining more behind the tradition he practiced. What we know for certain is we found the seven laws gone into detail in the Kybalion in the Nag Hammadhi library in 4th Century Egypt AD, whilst also appearing in the ‘Emerald Tablets of Thoth’.
As we begin this series, it is important to realise that I will be speaking from my own direct experiences and teachings as well. So, if you come across me saying something like ‘all Elements are sentient’ then it is because I have experienced this beyond intellectual thought. However, having a good understanding of some of these principles can still significantly help improve our lives and thus was the inspiration behind this series.
