Newsletter – October 2025 – The farmer and his horse

The Story of the chinese farmer and the horse
Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away.
That evening, all of his neighbours came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.”
The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”
The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Maybe.”
The next day the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbours came around and said, “Isn’t that great!” Again, he said, “Maybe.”
I really like this short story as it has so many hidden meanings within it, and you can grasp different things each time you view it. Therefore, I am going to look at one idea in this newsletter and talk about another in the next one based on the same story.
The first is that I want you to contemplate that in life we want to know! We want to know what is coming next. We are often obsessed with looking into the future and planning the next aspect of our life. Many of us enjoy, whether subconsciously or consciously, putting life into little neat piles of black and white. Each with its own drawer and labelled category. This structure makes us feel safe, and so we seek it in most things we do. The problem is that deep down we know we don’t know how things will turn out. Not really. We might use examples from our past of what we can expect etc. but we cannot be certain. Even if we have pushed these thoughts and ideas down, they remain in our subconscious. Hence, we can feel tremendous anxiety when we think about the future as it takes away our control, the sense of the unknown is scary.
The paradox of this is that life is unfolding moment to moment, it is not getting somewhere, it simply is. If you hold the idea of a flower slowly blooming, its petals gently extending out, you get closer to how life is moving. What makes this idea more fascinating is if you were to work with your mediumship, you are operating from a place of not knowing. This allows you to know, or at the very least feel into those energies.
Ultimately, what I am hinting here is the more you surrender into your life, the more you accept life as it comes rather than control how you want it to come, the more peace and space you will feel. This is not a straightforward thing to do, as the cries of the animal feeling unsafe within you will be felt but a gentle exploration into this idea, might give you more insights into how life truly is and make it easier when life throws a challenge.
