“I am the true green and Golden Lion without cares, in me all the secrets of the Philosophers are hidden.’

For this month, I am going to touch upon a very famous esoteric and alchemical symbology that you will find below. It is of a green lion eating the Sun. What is important to remember with any symbolism is that is always multi layered and different meanings can come from it, much like in the way of dreams that carry layer upon layer about one’s own unconscious movements.

The reason I am talking about this picture is that I am often drawn to explaining one meaning of it at the end of many psychic readings with people, as it sums up the challenge all human beings face regularly, and one we must look to overcome again and again, so we can begin to uncover our true nature.

The Sun represents who we are as we stand in our divine nature, a symbol of our everlasting beauty. Who we are in our peace, contentment, and joy of simply being alive. One where we move with life instead of against it, seeing the beauty in all things and understanding the oneness in all of life. This aspect of ourselves is not something outside of yourself or even something that needs attaining. Rather, it is a state of being that unfolds as we heal the patterns that hold it back that we have either inherited from our ancestors or picked up ourselves within our life from the environment.

This is where the Lion that is trying to eat the Sun comes into play. The lion can symbolise many forces within us, but for this, he represents our desire to control, the desire to stay safe. He is the one that would rather keep you in unhealthy patterns of thinking and behaviour, the one that even make you unhappy as this still provides a sense of comfort and safety. He is the one that whispers ‘just one more chocolate’ when you are trying to lose weight, the one that keeps you in the unhappy relationship when you know it is time to leave, as that relationship still provides safety, and the unknown is scary. However, he is also the one the keeps you alive, the one that urges you to eat and to sleep, and to survive. For this reason, he is not going away.

For many of us at times he can be quiet, well fed and happy that you staying within your confines of safety. However, as the inner voice begins to stir within you at different times in your life and you are urged to grow, to change, to heal, he begins to roar, for he is scared of change, fearful of you stepping into your beauty. Remember, he needs to keep you alive, so he will urge you to come back to the safety of his grasp. It is in these time of significant challenge where a great transformation awaits for us, where we will need to acknowledge him, continually stroke him, tell him we are still safe, we are just growing, and he can go back to his rest. Thanking him for his duty in our survival. Content, he eventually accepts this and you move more into your divine nature. Until the next time the voice is stirred, and this roar might even be louder……
